Scraps & Crumbs

Every now and then we find a really memorable user review on an online platform. This review of Taiwanese restaurant Memory Corner in Richmond, B.C. is one such instance; this gave us a really warm laugh.

The review opens with this brilliant hook:

“I have been here a number of times already and I didn’t want to like it at first. Why?

Have you ever met someone that was your perfect match in every way but you knew that if you fell in love, you’d die of heartbreak because you knew it could never happen? Something would tear you apart never to see that person again and each day after would be laden with the loss, the emptiness, the pain.

This is why for me I avoided this place for so long.”

And it ends with this wonderful flourish:

“So while I can, I will savour your kisses of each grain of fried rice, celebrate in the way you sauté vegetables with tenderness and rejoice in gingery heat you present with your chicken dishes. I will do this all without abandon and like Juliet. [I] shall not let the likes of the Montagues and the Capulets admonish my love for this Memory Corner.”

The whole review:

I have been here a number of times already and I didn’t want to like it at first.  Why?

Have you ever met someone that was your perfect match in every way but you knew that if you fell in love, you’d die of heartbreak because you knew it could never happen?  Something would tear you apart never to see that person again and each day after would be laden with the loss, the emptiness, the pain.

This is why for me I avoided this place for so long.  Until one day I couldn’t take it anymore.  I decided to say hello and I let myself fall in love.

I’ve had friends eat here and they love it.  Just like me we are worried that despite how good the food is we could be torn away if ever Memory Corner becomes just that, a memory.  The sadness and anger against the landlord if he decides when to tear down those walls to make way for a newer building or sell out to the economies of real estate (greed) advancement.

But dare I say it?  Yes! Oh my Yes!  I am so glad I found you and fell into your culinary arms and let your Taiwanese soul food take me away into heavenly abyss.  I love your hot pots, the wonderful clean and flavourful vegetarian soups and other dishes like the fried chicken nuggets. Those tender juicy pieces of chicken deep fried to perfection that only a few places I’ve tried have come close to the way you make yours.

I have succumbed to your succulence.  Could it ever be described any better?

So while I can, I will savour your kisses of each grain of fried rice, celebrate in the way you sauté vegetables with tenderness and rejoice in gingery heat you present with your chicken dishes.  I will do this all without abandon and like Juliet. [I] shall not let the likes of the Montagues and the Capulets admonish my love  for this Memory Corner.
