Our Brush with Tuscan Magic
Our stay in Tuscany placed us within convenient reach of Montepulciano, a name that became synonymous for us with leisure, indulgence and good company. We’ve spent countless evenings luxuriating over Montepulciano wines, at home and in restaurants, their robust flavour creating a sensory association to memories of good wine and even better conversation. With the town just a short drive away how could we resist visiting this place, that has, in spirit, already been a guest at so many of our dinners?
This walled medieval town curls like a ribbon along the narrow ridge high above the Vino Nobile wine-growing region. It’s a place where the past feels startlingly alive, with ancient stone worn smooth by centuries of passing feet. It’s grand, yet intimate, offering sweeping views of the iconic Tuscan countryside that make you pause and simply stare.

A Labyrinth of Flavors and History
Small cafes and restaurants pepper the narrow, rolling streets, and wine tastings await around almost every corner. (Pro Tip: wear good walking shoes; wandering here as much a workout as it is a wine crawl!). Groups of tourists huddled together and puzzling over nearly useless local tourism maps provide a little side entertainment. Montepulciano’s streets don’t follow any apparently logical pattern, so don’t expect their maps to either. Grab one for a general sense of layout but embrace the joy of being a little lost, with every turn providing the potential of a lovely discovery.
While we didn’t stay the night in Montepulciano, the town seems like it would be an incredible base for exploring the region. Its proximity to other picturesque villages, vineyards, and even hot springs makes it a dream destination for anyone looking to fully immerse themselves in Tuscan charm.
Golden Hours and Musical Echoes
Between glasses of exquisite wine, we sobered up (well, sort of) by wandering through streets flanked by Renaissance palaces, their grandeur somehow enhanced by the narrow alleys. We imagined how these walls must glow under Tuscany’s special golden light at sunset .
A particular highlight of our wanderings was the music. As we strolled past the Accademia Palazzo Ricci, the faint strains of opera drifted through the air, wrapping the streets in an ethereal ambiance. The sounds of a rehearsing singer and orchestra spilled over the stone walls, transforming our alley into an open-air theater. It was as if Montepulciano itself was serenading us.

A Moment to Remember
Our memories of Montepulciano are vivid, but one moment stands out above the rest. Sitting on a sun-warmed cobblestone street, we savoured a charcuterie board and sipped wine as the day softened into evening. An elegantly dressed elderly man sat a few feet away, completely absorbed in his book, his presence a perfect accent to the scene. It was as if time had slowed, allowing us to exist fully in this dream-like bubble of tranquility.
The simplicity of it—a glass of wine, the whisper of a warm breeze, and the knowledge that places like this exist in the world—felt like the truest kind of luxury.
