What is Drom?
Drom Taberna – the “love child” of La Palette’s owner Shamez Amlani and his wife Maria – captured our hearts from the day it opened. Drom, as it’s affectionately known to its fans, quickly established a well-deserved notoriety for its genuine underground culture vibe, delicious Eastern European/Balkan food and, of course, spectacular live music.
A Typical Drom Dinner
Drom’s mix of Eastern European and Balkan fare suits a casual evening of grazing with a loved one or with a table full of good friends while listening to music and indulging in a few (OK, many!) drinks.
Goulash – This dish rivals the “best ever”, heavenly goulash we devoured at a renowned Hungarian restaurant in Warsaw. This meaty stew is an all-season comfort food and makes for great cool weather noshing. There are two ways to enjoy this magical stew. One is to devour it all at a sitting, using the delicious bread to give the dishwasher a break by mopping up every drop of the rich sauce at the end. Another is for two people to order the large portion and save a little bit for next day’s breakfast. Served with a runny yolk, fried egg the leftover goulash is outrageously yummy (*Note: it’s awesome with a poached egg as well).
Ćevapi – These wonderfully grilled Bosnian beef and veal kabobs are addictive AF. Tuck one into some of the bread provided, top it with Ajvar (a roasted red pepper relish pronounced eye-var) and kajmak (a creamy, dreamy dairy spread, pronounced Kay-Mak). ). Then layer in a generous amount of paper-thin slices of onion, and enjoy!
Mushrooms – Eastern European cuisine is famous for its mastery of all things mushroom. These king oyster and cremini mushrooms were cooked with garlic, onions, kale and herbs, all tossed in a delicious green adjika sauce. This is a dish full of deep flavours – umami for days!
Potato – these pan roasted fingerling potatoes are a thing of beauty. Cooked with garlic butter and green adjika they have a creamy texture that melted in the mouth. They were so good that we broke our long-standing rule about keeping some fingerlings for next day pan frying and just devoured them all at our evening sitting.
Burek – This dish is similar to spanakopita: buttery and flaky pastry filled with spinach and feta. It was the best one we’ve had!
A Word About Booze
Drom is a wonderful place to enjoy great cocktails, interesting beer, and great wine with friends. Prices are reasonable, and when the music and dancing gets rolling libations can flow freely – so caution is warranted!
Unique treats also await. Misha – Drom Taberna’s face to the world – creates his own vodka infusions. They’re delicious – and also dangerously easy to drink in larger quantities than normal discretion warrants.
A Word About Prices
In an era of ever-increasing food and drink costs its appropriate to comment generally about this. Drom’s prices are very reasonable, particularly in light of the quality and quantity of food that you get in each dish.
